Turkish Simit Bread

Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
Topping
  • 1 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup water for dipping
  • 2 tablespoons molasses or honey

Method
 

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
Shape and Bake
  1. Preheat the oven to 425?F (220?C).
  2. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and form a circle, pinching the ends together.
  3. In a saucepan, mix water and molasses. Dip each simit into the mixture and then coat with sesame seeds.
  4. Place the simit on a baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
