Ingredients

Warm Cider & Citrus Base
  • 1 gallon pure unfiltered apple cider freshly pressed, not clear apple juice
  • 2 large navel or blood oranges washed and cut into 1/4-inch wheels
  • 2 medium Honeycrisp or Gala apples sliced into wedges or rings
Whole Mulling Spices & Caramel Sweetener
  • 5 whole cinnamon sticks Ceylon or Cassia
  • 4 whole star anise pods
  • 1 tbsp whole cloves pressed into orange peel or floated in a spice bag
  • 1 tsp whole allspice berries
  • 0.5 whole fresh nutmeg cracked or grated
  • 0.5 cup rich caramel sauce homemade or high-quality store-bought
  • 0.25 cup dark brown sugar optional, adjust to taste for extra molasses warmth
Optional Serving Garnishes
  • 1 cup whipped cream for crowning each warm mug
  • 2 tbsp extra caramel sauce for drizzling over whipped cream
  • 10 whole cinnamon sticks for serving as natural stirrers

Method

Slow Simmering & Infusion
  1. Load the Slow Cooker: Pour the entire gallon of pure unfiltered apple cider into a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Stir in the caramel sauce and dark brown sugar until partially dissolved.
  2. Add Fresh Citrus and Whole Spices: Arrange sliced orange wheels and apple wedges over the cider. Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise pods, whole cloves, allspice berries, and cracked nutmeg. (Pro tip: Studding the orange rinds with the cloves keeps them contained for effortless ladling!).
  3. Slow Simmer to Fragrant Perfection: Cover with the slow cooker lid and cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours (or on HIGH for 2 hours) until steam escapes with an intoxicating holiday aroma and the spices have deeply infused into the sweet cider.
  4. Hold at Warm for Gatherings: Switch slow cooker setting to "WARM". The cider can remain safely on warm for up to 5 hours, making your entire home smell like a cozy autumn orchard while guests serve themselves.
  5. Ladle and Garnish: Stir gently with a ladle. Ladle hot spiced cider into heat-safe glass mugs. Top each serving with a swirl of whipped cream, a golden caramel drizzle, and a cinnamon stick stirrer with a star anise on top. Serve immediately!
