Challah Bread

A traditional Jewish bread, Challah is slightly sweet and has a beautiful braided appearance, making it perfect for special occasions.

Ingredients
  

Dough
  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 cup Warm water About 110?F
  • 1/2 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 1/4 cup Vegetable oil
  • 3 large Eggs Plus 1 for egg wash

Method
 

Prepare the Dough
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, oil, and eggs. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Shape and Bake
  1. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into three equal pieces.
  2. Roll each piece into a long rope. Braid the three ropes together and tuck the ends under.
  3. Place the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350?F (175?C). Brush the dough with the beaten egg.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow sounding when tapped.
